Water: that vital resource on which we all depend is no longer just a necessity, gradually transforming into a vast consumer market in all its facets. When we talk about water, we typically think of what we use for our essential needs—water we drink, cook with, clean with, or use for personal hygiene. But we rarely consider, especially those of us living in cities or towns, where that liquid goes once it has been used. Since antiquity, in urban centers like Athens, Alexandria, and Babylon, stagnant waters caused hundreds of thousands of deaths from diseases like cholera and the bubonic plague, which were also transmitted by rodents.
